REVIEW OF THE MOVIE CHAURANGA

Film  : Chauranga

Producer :Anticlock Films in association with Surya Ventures , NFDC

Director : Bikas Ranjan Mishra

Writer : Bikas Ranjan Mishra

Cast : Sanjay Suri , Tannishta Chatterjee, Arpita Chatterjee , Riddhi Sen , Soham Maitra ,     Dhritiman    Chatterjee etc

Overview : Chauranga means four colours .
The movie is based on Caste system that still prevails in some parts of India  even after a decade of independence

Set in the hinterlands of UP , in a small village  , where caste system still prevails , the dalits are exploited at the hands of the patraich . The movie revolves round young  Santu (Soham Maitra) , who is a rebellious dalit kid who is on verge of adolescence , who roams  around the village whole day doing nothing amidst all this he is infatuated with the zamindar's daughter (Enasaha) , whom he watches atop trees . Santu's elder brother Bajrangi (Riddhi Sen) , goes  to school in town , their mother Dhaniya( Tannishta Chatterjee) , works as servant at the house of the Zamindar ( Sanjay Suri) , the zamindar exploits her sexually as the pay off for aiding education of her son , Bajrangi . Bajrangi in return has to daily bow down at the feet of Zamindar , but Santu  never bows down to the zamindar that's why he is not sent to school ,  there are other characters also in the film like the blind village priest , zamindar's oppressed wife (Arpita Chatterjee) , etc.  The film is about how high caste exploits the low caste . The film shows the brutality scenes especially the ones involved in which the blind priest does not spare anyone whether women or animal from his cruelty . Further Santu wants Bajrangi  to write a love letter for him addressed to the zamindar's daughter , he writes it and Santu also manages to give it to the zamindar's daughter , but lo it also falls in the hands of the zamindar , what happens next is for the audience to watch , and what happens to Dhaniya is  for audience to watch .

Performances : Sanjay Suri as the zamindar has done total justice to the role , all characters are well established , as per their role , Dhaniya being a dalit women tactfully  uses her sexuality to fund her sons education ,  Arpita Chatterjee wife of zamindar has played a heartrending role .

Verdict : Though the film is an eye opener for all  that such  on one  side where everywhere there is modernism and technology , but still in some parts of rural India caste and creed  systems are active  , there is zero development   no electricity and water even basic amnesties are lacking and dalits still exist . The film has travelled various film festivals  . The film  seems like incomplete , there are lots of empty spaces , the issues are just highlighted , the story lacks any volume and no solutions also .

A once watch movie  if you are lover of realistic cinema , its certainely not your regular popcorn flick
Rating : 3*/5*
