Hansal Mehta’s ‘Aligarh’ Trailer Makes a Compelling, Sensitive Argument Against Social Discrimination

MUMBAI; January 28, 2016: National award winning director Hansal Mehta has wooed international film lovers with his sensitive film ‘Aligarh’. At its trailer launch here in Mumbai, it’s focus on awakening awareness for an individual’s choice and right to privacy connected with the media & the audience.

 

With the film’s cast& crew, lead actor Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkummar Rao & writer-editor Apurva Asrani, attending the trailer launch, the impact of ‘Aligarh’ was there for all to see. Set in a small town in Uttar Pradesh from which the film takes its name, ‘Aligarh’ is the story of a professor, Dr. S R Siras (Manoj Bajpayee) fired from his position for his sexuality and a young journalist, Deepu Sebastian (Rajkummar Rao) who tells his story to the world. Based on true events, the film depicts the unlikely friendship between the two, a relationship that will change both of them forever.

 

So far, ‘Aligarh’, within a relevant context of intolerance & compromise with an individual’s freedom of personal choice raging across urban India, has won accolades in film festivals worldwide. It was only the second Hindi film in 17 years to open the 17^th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival in October, 2015. The film has also travelled to the prestigious Busan International Film Festival for its World premiere & the 59^th BFI London Film Festival.

It was like a reveal-all conversation which saw Sunny reminisce about her childhood, divulging never-before details about her personal life, past and present, including the story of how she was wooed by husband Daniel, her advice for sex addicts, her idea of an ideal man, whether she thinks Indians have double standards on sex, what it takes for a woman to wear a bikini regardless of size, and more.

 Qs : Tell us something about your childhood?

Ans: “I wasn’t popular; In fact there is a picture of mine floating around on the internet, which has me in a unibrow and hair all over the place! I didn’t really discover myself until I turned 19. I used to play with GI Joes and not Barbies!  I never thought of myself as hot or sexy.”

 

Qs: Since you are playing role of a teacher to a sex addict group in Mastizaade, what is your  definition of a sex addict ?

 Ans :“I think if sex takes over your mind and your ability to have a normal life, then the person is a sex addict and should seek help.”

 

 Qs : What kind of a guy would be Sunny’s ideal man?

Ans  “For me it has to be the whole package. It’s not just about being funny. They should have a sense of humour, they should take care of their bodies, groom themselves, and have their own sense of style. There is nothing nicer than a guy who knows his sense of style, knows what he wants, and not a guy who needs his girlfriend to say wear this T shirt and these jeans, here’re your shoes, your socks, your sneakers, out you go!”

 

Qs : How did Daniel wooed you to marry him  ,And tell us  something about your wedding at Gurudwara .?

 Ans :“Daniel is hot, sweet, funny and makes me laugh all day. We’ve been together for eight years now, and have been married for five. We got married in a Gurudwara and had a very traditional Punjabi wedding. He still turns red when I talk about him.

“Daniel is more the romantic one than I am. He definitely worked to get my attention – wherever I’d go… to a restaurant or anywhere else… he would send a dozen roses or a box of chocolates, and then when I used to go home, I’d find flowers on the steps. He was a borderline stalker! It had never happened with me before that a guy tried so much or made so many efforts to impress me. He would write me beautiful letters and stuff. At the end of the day, a girl wants a prince who treats her like a princess.”

 

Qs Dou you follow the tradition of Karwa Chauth, ?

Ans : “I don’t keep (the) Karva Chauth (fast) for Daniel as we are more spiritual than    religious.”

 

Qs : Do you think Indians have double standards towards sex, ?

Ans :“I think that people are a lot more accepting, a lot more open minded than we give them credit for; I am a walking proof of that. If people had double standards and were this way, I wouldn’t have been here.”

 

Qs : How do you maintain a bikini body, Do Give us some tips?

Ans : “I normally eat healthy khana, and work out a lot. But I think for a woman to be in a bikini, whatever the size,  it takes guts and a little bit of courage and confidence,”

 I  also urge women to embrace their bodies and let go of their inhibitions. “Just love your body; who cares what size you are?! The whole world knows I have curves, so one just has to embrace it. I have been to places where I see short women, tall women, skinny women, in their bikinis. They are happy, they are proud, strutting their stuff, having a good time. I think one just have to let go.”

 

Review of Movie Kya Kool Hain Hum 3

Overview : Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 , is 3rd instalment in the series by same name , and the worst of the 3 , Infact it is first porn con movie , with cheesy lines and double and triple meaning dialogues.

Story Line : Story revolves round 2 friends Kanhaiya (Tusshar Kapoor ) who is son of a textile busness man and who looks down upon his son , as a loser , other is Rocky (Aftab Shivdasani ) , who is a average guy , both Kanhaiya and Rocky are fed up with their current situation in India , when their friend (Krushna) who lives  in Bangkok calls them over , they reach there and come to  know that Krushna makes   sex parodies of every Bollywood hit , he has around 4 porn stars staying at his place . Krushna convinces both Kanhaiya and Rocky  to work for him , and they make sex parodies of recent Bollywood hits , they become very popular in Bangkok , until one day Kanhaiya accidentally meets Shalu (Mandana Karimi) , he falls in love with her at first sight , they both come close , so much so that Kanhaiya Proposes to her , Shalu  agrees taking a step further she calls Kanhaiya one day  and informs him that her family wants to meet him and his family , Kanhaiya gets upset as his father was in India and and planning to marry his aunt (Meghna Naidu) , and he was unaware as to that his son was working in in porn film , Kanhaiya is in a mess as he cannot reveal to his to be father in law about his real identity , so he along with Rocky , Krushna and porn team and  in order to impress the would be father-in-law he makes the pornstars pretend like they are his family. On the other hand Kanhaiya's real father (Shakti Kapoor) , along with his to be wife also arrives in Bangkok , this all leads to a turbulence of comedy and confusion . What happens next , whether their work identity is revealed , whether Kanhaiya is able to impress his to be father in law , whether porn artist are able to enact as family members perfectly is for the audience to watch .

Performances:  Performance by all artist is average .

Verdict : Its supposed to be sex comedy , but comedy is zero , they don't make you to laugh . Porn scenes are all nonsense , the direction is bad so is the music . And if a plethora of triple meaning dialogue weren't enough, you have cheesy product placements in like every scene.

Overview : Airlift is a Tribute to patriotism   by our Action Hero Akshay Kumar .Film is based on the true incident that happened when Kuwait was attacked by Saddam Husein of Iraq . The film is based on the biggest evacuation of 1,70,000 Indians that were stuck in Kuwait when war was declared by Iraq , Akshay Kumar is playing a true character , role of the person who was carried out this operation of saving Indians in Kuwait . Akshay Kumar has very well played the role .

Story Line : Film revolves around Ranjit Katyal (Akshay Kumar ) , who is a shrewd business tycoon living in Kuwait , who has lots of conctacts  around U.A.E till the Minister levels . His wife Amrita (Nimrat Kaur ) , and he along with a daughter live a luxurious life in Kuwait , until one day when fate takes a U-turn when Overnight Iraq attacks Kuwait , all kuwaites including Ranjit's driver gets killed in front of him , those incidents totally changes the attitude of Ranjit , Seeing killings everywhere he comes to know that there are around 1,70,000 Indians in Kuwait , Including his huge staff that were Indians , he takes upon his shoulder the responsibility of saving these people . He faces lots of difficulties in evacuating the Indians from Kuwait , like Indian Embassy was not ready to help him , he tries his sources in Iraq and Baghdad but fails to implement any rescue operation , on top of that U.N stops exports and imports from and to Kuwait , He does get frustrated but, does  not let these hurdles  to stop him to achieve his goal , with a small ray of  hope from the foreign ministry in India a person who  named Kohli  who was working there , he manages to  plan out some strategies for evacuation ,with lots of hardship , what was that strategy , does he succeed in getting Indians out of Kuwait , what hurdles he faces at each step is for the audience to watch ., as many  of them did not have proper papers and passports .

Performances : Brilliant performance by Akshay Kumar , he is at best of his game . His break down , his confidence , his sensitivity his ability to emote , his ability to deliver , are all shown brilliantly in AirLift ,   he has the entire film on his shoulder which he does complete justice . No other actor could have performed the role of Ranjit better than Akshay ,  Nimrat Kaur has also played her role of a typical House wife very perfectly , with some great dialogue delivery in one such scene , that required her to lash out on some person. Purab Kohli has played a good supporting role ,

Direction by Raja Krishna Menon is good . Point to Point .

Music  is good with songs in background .

Locations are brilliant , cinematography is excellent .

Verdict : The film is released at a very eccentric point when Republic Day is just around the corner , and theme of the movie is Patriotic , this time of the year i.e 26 th Jan , there is  a mood for patriotism
everywhere. The film is a must watch as most of us were unaware about what had happened in 1990 when Kuwait was attacked by Iraq , and that so many Indians were stuck there . and how they were rescued.

The film is Directed by critically acclaimed Abishek Sharma who has directed the first one and after that his movie shaukeen had come that did not fare well at the box office , but this sequel of tere bin laden looks promising ,  Director Abhishek said that after News had come from U.S.A that Osama Bin Laden is dead , but there were reports that there was no  proof whether he is dead or alive , that is what makes the path for this film in its second instalment . The trailer shows scenes of tug of war between U.S and the terrorist that tickles your funny bones , Manish Paul doing the mockery of being a great director  awaiting his big break at Hollywood . Manish Paul at his best with his silent helicopters scene that will make you laugh endlessly . Piyush Mishra adds up the needed comic terror . Pradyuman as Bin Laden is good . We hope movie would make us laugh till we drop . Meanwhile enjoy the trailer .
