‘Pearl Portfolio 2017’ Showcases the Next Gen in Fashion, Design and Creative Business

Pearl Academy, India’s leading private institution in design, fashion and creative businesses hosted their annual graduation event ‘Portfolio 2017’ at the Bombay Exhibition and Convention Centre in the city. The event showcased creative and design acumen of the graduating batch from the Mumbai campus. It was a culmination of several years of hard work of 107 students from various courses mentored by the faculty. The event was inaugurated by Naina Toor from Sony Entertainment, Subodh Dakwale from Indian oil and Linda Brown, President, Torrens University, Australia. The event saw a multitude of ingenious projects in the domains of design and luxury brands in an exhibition.
 
 
School of Fashion, Styling &Textiles and School of Creative Business also hosted two panel discussions with industry experts and professionals. The panel discussions underlined some very relevant subjects in fashion styling and creative business domains that will enable young design professions to design their career paths. The first panel comprising of Ms Lebana Penkar from Future Group

Mr Sanjay Dash from 7 islands Strategic Business Consulting and Mr Rajiv Subramanian from Woodstock Merchandising discussed the various possibilities that creative business offers as an industry.
 
The second panel discussion was ‘Wave Makers: Stylist and Image Curators 2.0’, which included renowned industry spokespersons like Nisha Jhangiani - Fashion Director, Verve Magazine; designer RohitChaturvedi; Fashion Director &owner of Meher Ahmed Styling - Meher Ahmed and One of the country’s leading fashion and advertising photographers -  Vishesh Verma.
 
With over 100 projects at display, Pearl Portfolio 2017 saw some revolutionary ideas in fashion, design and creative business. Fashion students came up with interesting ideas like a fashion line inspired by the fairy-tale and magical bright light of Aurora Borealis (The Northern Lights). This collection stood out with the colours and forms of the Borealis. Another unique creation was made from the used flowers collected from various temples from Mumbai. Some of the interesting design projects included a chapel cum retirement home to cater to the sociological and psychological needs of the senior citizens and a therapy centre for autistic kids.
 
 
 
 
Pearl Academy students also gave a grand culmination to their campaign #MumbaiByDesign which celebrated the spirit of people of Mumbai through various events such as designing aprons and dustbins for the eating joints of Mumbai, painting canvases on the theme of unsung heroes of the city. These canvasses will be gifted to KM Hospital, Mayor’s office, BEST office, Daabawalas Associations’ office and other government institutions. The students also designed special cushioned  caps for the Dabbawalas. Giving the campaign a grand conclusion, the Dabbawalas, taxi and auto drivers and fisher women walked the ramp for the first of its kind fashion show.
 
 
Renowned icons of Mumbai including Designer Manish Malhotra, Adman Prahlad Kakkar, Actor Anand Tiwari and Sudhir Sharma founder and chairman INDI Design reflected on their journeys in the city of dreams. Meher Castelino,first Miss India and a proud citizen of Mumbai moderated the discussion.
 
Speaking at the event, noted fashion designer Mr. Manish Malhotra said, “I am amazed to see the creativity of the students.It is wonderful to find so much talent under one roof. I congratulate the graduating students and also appreciate Pearl Academy for their unique initiative #MumbaiByDesign. I hope that they will make a difference not just to the fields that they work in but also by taking initiatives that will take them to newer heights in their careers”.
